Nissan GT-R

 Nissan GT-R
With its last record lap time on Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany, in April 2009, clocked at 7’:26” 70, the GT-R has long been called “one of the fastest cars in the world.”
Now, the Nissan GT-R is officially “the fastest four seating production car in the world in terms of acceleration.” Achieving 0-100km in 3.5 seconds has won the GT-R a Guinness World Record.

2010 Nissan Micra Review

2010 Nissan Micra
2010 Nissan Micra

STYLING

Thos expecting another bold design in the mould of the previous Micra and the company's Qashqai and Juke are in for disappointment - if anything, this car looks older than the car it replaces. It's inoffensive, but resembles a Korean model of two or three years back. The story's much the same inside, too.

HANDLING

Well-weighted, electric power steering whose assistance varies with speed makes the Micra easy to handle on urban roads, especially as it has a tight turning circle, but wet weather road holding is below average, and this Nissan does not tackle corners with the enjoyable verve of the Ford Fiesta or the Suzuki Swift.

COMFORT

A wheel that only adjusts for rake slightly compromises the driving position, but the front seats are comfortable, and for the most part so is the ride, though potholes can cause the odd thump. Wind and road noise intrusion is average.

QUALITY & RELIABILITY

This Micra is built in India, in a brand new plant supported by factories newly established by Nissan's suppliers, with the result that fit and finish are no different to any other Nissan. But, the hard-feel dashboard and relatively unsophisticated plastics are less appealing than those in the Fiesta, VW Polo or Fiat Punto, for example.

PERFORMANCE

The Micra's smooth, 80bhp three-cylinder pulls fairly well, and with an impressive absence of the idle vibration that's usually an issue with engines of this type. However, its performance is not as strong as Suzuki's Swift, for example, and the light gearbox needs committed work if brisk progress is required. Committed use of the accelerator is needed to make the CVT automatic get going, and there's a noisy high-rev penalty to go with it, and it grumbles somewhat at low revs.

ROOMINESS

This Micra's a little bigger than the last one, to the benefit of rear seat room, particularly head and knee space, making this a decently comfortable supermini. The boot is a little small, but all that changes when the back seats are folded, to provide a generous and impressively flat load space - increasingly unusual in the class today. Oddments space is good up front too, with two gloveboxes, a shelf, cup-holders and door bins.

STEREO / SAT NAV

The Top Acenta trim comes with an excellent sat nav as standard, and it's a keenly priced option for buyers of the middle Tekna trim. The base Visia pack does not offer the option, however, and the lack of a power socket on this model annoyingly prevents the powering of a portable sat nav. The stereo is pretty good for the class.

RUNNING COSTS

The Micra is competitively priced and equipped, is economical and benefits from significantly lower insurance groupings than before. And its low CO2 emissions make it cheap to tax too. Whether it's more conventional design adversely affects used values effectively remains to be seen.

VALUE FOR MONEY

The entry-level price of the base Visia trim makes the Micra one of the most affordable models to offer 115g/km of CO2, and it comes slightly better equipped than the competition, although the lack of 12 volt power socket for phones is a serious omission.

ENVIRONMENT

Emissions of 115g/km for the manual and 125g/km for the automatic are good, and that's without the stop-start system that Nissan will eventually offer. The planned supercharged 1.2, with emissions of just 95g/km, eliminates the need to offer a diesel.

Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V Review

Nissan Sentra SE R
One of the biggest complaints with our long-term 2007 Nissan Sentra SE-R, which we sent home about 18 months ago, was its fun-sucking CVT. The gearless gearbox did not endear itself to our staffers, who were perplexed by its inclusion in what was supposed to be a sporty sedan. This gearbox conundrum does not exist in the SE-R Spec V, however, as it gets a proper three-pedal six-speed manual. So, with the gearbox issue solved, does the Sentra become a legitimate sport-compact player?

Here are the details in parts:

On the powertrain front, the Spec V compares favorably to the competition. Its 2.5-liter I-4 makes 200 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. These figures handily beat the likes of the Mitsubishi Lancer GTS and Subaru Impreza. Plus, it's got more torque than the Civic Si. More important, it matches perennial segment leader (if you ignore body-style differences) Volkswagen GTI on power, though it's short a considerable 27 pound-feet of torque. It's not the greatest-sounding four-cylinder around, but it's less harsh than the Lancer's and provides a broad torque curve with a linear powerband, which are agreeable traits to have in a performance-oriented motor. Unfortunately, it's compromised by overly aggressive throttle tip-in, which makes it difficult to modulate input until past the quarter-throttle mark. Torque steer is nearly absent, thanks in part to the optional limited-slip differential that's part of the $2200 Spec V Upgrade.
Nissan Sentra SE R
The aforementioned six-speed does the job well, but it's not buttery-smooth like the box that you'd find in the Honda. Shifts are short and precise, but the shifter feels notchy and disconnected. The clutch is neither too heavy nor too light, with a good pickup point, an important positive given the jumpy nature of the throttle.

Brakes are a similarly mixed experience. The 12.6-inch front rotors are more than capable of stopping the small sedan quickly, but like the shifter, the pedal feels disconnected and provides little feedback.

Things are better on the chassis side. The "sport-tuned" suspension is stiff, but not painfully so. Front and rear anti-roll bars do a good job negating body roll, and, despite a beam-axle rear, handling is surprisingly neutral for a front-drive car, with good turn-in and minimal understeer. Chassis rigidity is improved via a trunk-mounted V-brace. Unfortunately, the rear brace means the rear seats don't fold down to increase cargo space.

The Sentra's steering is disappointing overall. The steering column does not telescope, moving only up and down. There's not quite enough weight to it, but most disappointing, there's almost no feel. Nissan uses an electric power steering system in the Sentra instead of a hydraulic one, and these are notorious for sacrificing feedback at the altar of efficiency.

The experience from the driver's seat is largely agreeable, if compromised. The view from it, as well as from outside the car, isn't great. The Sentra was never a good-looking car, and the minimal fascia tweaks added by the Spec V package do little to change that. Interior design is similarly bland, with acres of black plastic as far as the eye can see. The SE-R sport buckets have decent, but not great, bolstering that'll be good enough to keep you in place during back-road hustling, but not good enough for serious track-day duty.

On the plus side, the car comes well equipped at a good price point. Our loaded tester, which featured the aforementioned Spec-V upgrade package that adds a rearview camera, satellite radio, moonroof, vanity mirrors, and an eight-speaker 340-watt stereo in addition to the limited-slip differential, plus a $400 navigation package, $110 worth of floormats, and $140 worth of splash guards, cost a reasonable $23,670. That's less than the base price of a GTI and just $1420 more than our SE-R long-termer. Prices have changed between then and now, of course, but today's base price difference between the SE-R and the Spec V is a mere $500.

That doesn't make the Sentra SE-R Spec V a standard-bearer for the class, but it does make it a viable choice for those who want a well-equipped sporty compact sedan with a reasonably powerful motor, don't want to pay the extra premium to step up to a GTI, and don't mind the absence of style.

Renderings Of The Nissan Juke

Nissan Juke
I may be bombarded for saying that the upcomming Nissan Juke looks more like a joke out of Disney channel (when viewed from the front) because of the saying that goes "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but I guess I will just have to live with that. Here is the rendering & article by Autoexpress. :

Nissan's Juke is out of the box! Just last week the Japanese manufacturer released a first official teaser shot of its all-new baby Qashqai, and at the same time revealed its name - 'Juke'. And now, using that image as a guide, we have the most accurate pictures yet of the firm's all-new crossover.

With the mould-breaking Qashqai, cut-price GT-R and now this compact SUV - designed to steal sales from traditional family hatchbacks - Nissan is fast earning a reputation for offering interesting alternatives to established models in the market. And judging by our exclusive images, the Juke's compact footprint and Tonka-toy looks mean it has every chance of mirroring the Qashqai's incredible showroom success.

Slotting in between the Note and Qashqai, the Juke will expand Nissan's broad range even further. And when it goes on sale in October, it should provide a welcome boost for the UK car industry too - it will be built alongside the Qashqai and Qashqai+2 at Nissan's Sunderland plant.

The Qazana concept car's swollen wheels arches have been carried over, along with the narrow, elongated headlights and oversize fog lights underneath, while the roofline have taken on a more angular profile.

Full details on the newcomer will be realeaed at the global media unveiling on February 10th, but it's public debut won't be until the Geneva Motor Show in March.
