Next MX-5 Will Be Lighter Said Mazda

According to Mazda the current generation of MX-5 has gotten to heavy for their liking hence they set a goal for the next incarnation to loose about 98kg to come close to the weight of the MX-5 Superlight concept. According to Officials at Mazda, making the MX-5 lighter will replicate the spirit of the original one weighing in at 970kg.

Among the measures Mazda plans to carry out through a smaller and lighter engine, likely to copy the original’s 1.6-litre capacity. “We are testing both 1.6 and 1.8-litre engines, which undercut our current 2.0-litre unit but deliver the same 160-170bhp power range,” they further added. The dimensions of the car's platform and wheelbase will remain intact but front & rear overhangs will be trimmed. Lightweight construction techniques will also be employed. Mazda is experimenting with using new steel construction methods that enable less metal to be used in its bodyshells.

Mazda is putting Takao Kijima who is the chief engineer for the first gen MX-5 as a special advisor for the new car. The new car is due in 2011. To put a "SMILE" in your face, sources are suggesting that the price could come down, too, to reflect the new MX-5’s more simple appeal. :)

The Mazda SKY engine & Kiyora Concept

Mazda's highlight at the Tokyo Motor Show is their newly developed SKY engine besides the Kiyora concept which was shown last year. Kicking things off with the Sky-G engine which is 2.0 liter unit with direct injection and an improved variable valve timing system which gives it a 15% fuel economy and torque advantage over the current MZR engine in the Mazda 3 2.0 Sport. The Sky-G engine now incorporates Direct injection which was usually found on the higher end turbocharged 2.3 liter engine. The SKY-D 2.2 liter diesel engines managed a 20% improvement on fuel efficientcy over the current 2.2 liter oil burner. To achieve this feat Mazda had the engine block designed in order to reduces mechanical friction to the level of a gasoline engine. Other features include piezo injectors and a two-stage turbocharger.

Equally as important is the transmission system of a vehicle as there is significant power loss taking place there. The Mazda Sky-Drive is a redesign 6-speed automatic that significantly reduces mechanical friction, a revised torque converter and clutch with minimized slip, and an optimized lock-up mechanism.

Bringing these technology together in the Kiyora results in an impressive mileage of 32 km per liter of fuel under the Japanese 10-15 cycle test. The kiyora will be powered by a 1.3 liter SKY-G engine with 6-speed transmission delivering power to the wheels. (start-stop technology & regenerative breaking is included in the technology list of Kiyora)

Mazda Japan announced that the Mazda 2 also known as Mazda Demio will be built at a new passenger car plant known as AutoAlliance Thailand Co Ltd. This company is a result of a joint venture manufacturing facility with Ford Motor Company. Location of the plant is no other than in Rayong Industrial Estate also known as the Detroit of South East Asia. The locally assembled Mazda 2 will be marketed in the ASEAN region with sales targeted to be around 20,000 units per year.

While The Japanese are busy with their Thai counter part, French automaker Peugeot has signed an agreement with Naza to assemble the 207 sedan in Malaysia . Naza is the current franchise holder for Peugeot in Malaysia under its company Nasim Sdn Bhd with their assembling facility located in Gurun Kedah. Local assembly will commence around 2010 October and the Gurun plant will be the only right hand drive 207 Sedan assembler in the world. A production of 18,000 units a year is planned. The 207 Sedan is essentially an updated 206 Sedan based on the 206 chassis with a 1.6 liter engine sitting under the hood.
